October 25, 2011

We have just concluded another successful season of the Copper Peak Adventure Ride.   In spite of the poor economy, our records show a modest increase of 2% this year; this on top of a 26% increase last season.  The weekend of October 1st and 2nd---full fall color---experienced the largest number of visitors to the site when 492 took the Adventure Ride.

Visitors continue to be attracted to this unique, iconic site which is rapidly becoming the #1 attraction in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.  Here's why they come:  R.N. of Cudahy, Wis. writes,  "The climb to the top of the tower is one of the biggest thrills of my 66 years."  C.H. of Naperville, Ill. writes for her family, "We all thoroughly enjoyed our visit and  agreed unanimously that it was the highlight of our weekend visit to the U.P."   For the 85-year old young lady who was initially a little apprehensive to take the adventure Ride commented as she was unloading from the chair lift, "I've never had so much fun in all my life."   We set an age record this season when a 101 year old gentleman took the Adventure Ride.   People of all ages enjoy the thrill of the ride and the view from atop the world's largest ski jump;  there's no other place like it sin the Midwest.

A special thanks to all our summer volunteers who assisted by operating the lift or the gift shop  including Gene Carlson, Jerry Lauzon, John Kusz, Paul Belmas, John Halverson, Sally Kusz, Kris and Karen Carlson, and Betsy Slabaugh.  The Michigan Summer Youth program provided us with some excellent young workers who did agreat job with maintaince and assisting with the lift and gift shop.   The skills they learned will be beneficial to their future careers.

Progress continues to be made on the slide to bring it closer to a ski flying date.   We have completed installing the inrun snow boards thanks to the efforts of John Kusz, John Halverson, Paul Belmas and 'Brian Lintonen.   The start gates are completed and ready to be installed.    Additionally we have nearly completed the 100,000 cubic foot collection pond for snow making; periodic rainfall slowed those efforts.   Coleman Engineering completed a center line mapping of the landing slope; it will be sent to FIS for their approval.  We expect to be starting construction of the safety fence along the landing slope this spring.

A special thanks to all our visitors who experienced the thrill of Copper Peak.
